Federal officials warn: Fake agents may try to get residents to leave so they can rob homes

Immigration enforcement officials addressed what it called “disturbing” reports of people impersonating Homeland Security Investigations agents.

Dallas News:

There have been reports of impostors knocking on doors in the Houston area telling residents to evacuate, perhaps so they can rob the empty homes, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Enforcement and Removal Operations said in a written statement.
Actual Homeland Security officials wear badges that say “special agent,” and the public can ask to see and verify them. ICE officers with Enforcement and Removal Operations wear badges labeled with ERO officer and carry credentials with their name and organization.
Anyone who encounters these people should ask for their credentials and badges. The officers and special agents would also be out conducting hurricane relief operations with local law enforcement agencies, officials said.
ICE has said it will not be conducting routine non-criminal immigration enforcement operations in the areas affected by the storm, including at evacuation sites or assistance centers such as shelters or food banks.
