Telegram Block Attempt In Russia Disrupts Entire Internet

Earlier this month, a Russian court gave regulators the authority to block Telegram. The popular encrypted messaging app is used not only by an estimated 13 million Russian users but Kremlin officials as well. As government officials tried to pull the plug on Telegram, the company responded by repeatedly switching IP addresses. It also encouraged users to rely on VPNs, and moved to American hosts Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services. After playing what the New York Times called “whack-a-mole” with thousands of individual IP addresses, the regulatory agency Roskomnadzor ham-handedly began blacking out entire subnets. Because of this, hundreds of unrelated businesses were unable to access the web. Among those affected was Viber, a Kremlin-approved messaging service. Also affected were museums, car dealerships, and schools. https://ift.tt/2JyD5qP http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
