Disparities In LGBTQ Healthcare

As a group, LGBTQ people often face worse health outcomes than their straight and cisgender peers. They struggle to find doctors who are knowledgeable about LGBTQ issues and in many cases, they struggle to find providers who treat them with respect — or even treat them at all. Experts call these gaps "health disparities." These disparities exist for many reasons. Ongoing stress caused by living in a society where LGBTQ people are stigmatized and subject to violence, as well as the lower rate of insurance coverage among the LGBT community are two primary reasons for the differences.Resources for locating LGBTQ-friendly doctors are available. The Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GMLA) maintains a database of more than 2,000 providers in the US and Canada who identify as LGBTQ-welcoming. The OutList, Lighthouse, and mytranshealth also help connect patients with culturally competent providers. https://ift.tt/2Kun9qP http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
