It's no secret Americans are getting fatter and fatter. At first, it was the received wisdom to eat low fat foods to lose weight. Now, it's more about avoiding sugar and simple carbohydrates. But can something be learned from our thinner neighbors around the world? For instance, the healthy and long-lived Japanese on the island of Okinawa only eat until their belly is 80% full. Many Israelis and Sardinians follow the heart-healthy Mediterranean diet, which is rich in fish, fruits and vegetables, and low on grains and red meat. Ethiopians serve their food on an edible "plate" of high-fiber injera bread, made from gluten-free and mineral-rich teff. And as for the elegant French, they tend to have lunches that are small in portion size, but high in fat--followed by a very light dinner.
