Before electric lighting was common, the average American got nine hours of sleep a night. Now, sleep experts say it's down to six and three-quarter hours. And since people are used this this lowered amount of shut-eye, most don't realize they're actually sleep deprived. But there are many signs and symptoms of sleep deprivation. For example, sleeping late and being hard to rouse on the weekend. Or being able to fall asleep anywhere, such as at a desk or in a car.
