Man donated blood every week for 60 years and saved the lives of 2.4 million babies

Most people get a gold watch when they retire, but James Harrison deserves so much more. Harrison, known as the "Man With the Golden Arm," has donated blood every week for 60 years. After 1,100 donations, the 81-year-old Australian man "retired" Friday. According to the Australian Red Cross, he has helped save the lives of more than 2.4 million Australian babies. Harrison's blood has unique, disease-fighting antibodies needed to develop the medication Anti-D, which helps fight against rhesus disease. The condition occurs when a pregnant woman's blood starts attacking her unborn baby's blood cells. In the worst cases, it can result in death, for the baby. The Australian Red Cross, said: "Every batch of Anti-D that has ever been made in Australia has come from James' blood." Now that Harrison has given his last blood donation the Blood Service hopes people with similar antibodies in their blood will step up and donate. https://ift.tt/2KfrehH http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
