New Mission May Improve Our Understanding Of Mercury's Orbit

According to a report by Gizmodo, scientists may have been a little off the mark with their understanding of Mercury's orbit. An upcoming mission may not only be able to correct our measurement of our solar companion's orbit, but also test Einstein's theory of general relativity. Clifford Will from the University of Florida has calculated what he calls post-Newtonian cross terms from the other planets. According to the paper published in Physical Review Letters, these are the effects of the distant planets updated with the new precision of general relativity, as well as new effects caused by the planets’ movement. Will writes, "These effects are likely to be detectable by the BepiColombo mission to place and track two orbiters around Mercury, scheduled for launch around 2018." https://ift.tt/2G1LRLO http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
