New York's Top Court Rejects Appeal To Free Chimps From Cages

Reuters reports that on Tuesday, New York's highest court rejected an appeal by the Nonhuman Rights Project looking to end the confinement of captive chimpanzees, Tommy and Kiko, by private owners and have them transferred to a sanctuary. The court let stand a June 2017 ruling by an intermediate state appeals court in Manhattan that decided chimpanzees are not legal persons, and leaving it up to legislators to decide what rights animals deserve. According to Reuters, the Nonhuman Rights Project believes that chimpanzees, like humans, are entitled to bodily liberty, and has for years sought to persuade courts to give animals legal rights. While agreeing with Tuesday’s 5-0 outcome, Judge Eugene Fahey reportedly said the question of whether animals are entitled to writs of habeas corpus, entitling them to freedom from detention, touches on a “deep dilemma of ethics and policy” that must be addressed. https://ift.tt/2rtICax http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
