Pope Makes U-Turn On Stance Against Chile Bishops' Sexual Abuse Cover-Up

According to a report by Reuters, in a dramatic U-turn from statements made in January, Pope Francis announced that he wants Chile's bishops to take responsibility for "devastating wounds" inflicted on the Church's credibility for a cover-up of clergy sexual abuse. In a Vatican statement made on Saturday, the Pope said there was a need “to deeply examine the causes and consequences, as well as the mechanisms, that in some cases led to cover-ups and grave omissions regarding the victims”. The letter came after a Vatican investigation into Bishop Juan Barros, appointed by the pope in 2015 despite allegations that he had covered up sexual abuse of minors by his mentor, Father Fernando Karadima. While visiting Chile in January, the pope claimed there was no proof against Barros, believed he was innocent and that accusations against him were “slander” until proven otherwise. https://ift.tt/2G6D5MB http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
