Scientists Train Spider To Jump On Command

In an effort to understand the evolution of jumping spiders, researchers at the University of Manchester examined the arachnids’ movement and behavior. Trained in a University lab, Kim the spider belongs to a species of jumping arachnid known as Phidippus regius, or Regal Jumping Spider. Kim learned to jump from different heights and distances, while the team recorded the vaults, then created a 3D model of Kim’s legs and body structure. What they found is that this particular breed relies on different strategies for different challenges. Spiders are known to use internal hydraulic pressure to extend their legs. Lead author Mostafa Nabawy explained, “The force on the legs at take-off can be up to five times the weight of the spider. If we can understand these biomechanics we can apply them to other areas of research.” The unlocked secrets of these jumping spiders could lead to a new class of agil micro-robots. https://ift.tt/2IspVPc http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
